FIRST LADY FANTASY
From property to citizen to prisoner to patriot
This is my brown story about my confusing path to freedom.
At the back of the bus looking out the window with my headphones on
My unwanted world turns so slowly as
I count the cars going by too fast, like the blurry days of my life
Son of a slave in the land of the free. Everybody knows it but pretends to forget…
So you made me invisible except at night
You only see me when you hold your purse tighter as I pass you by avoiding eye contact.
Urge to frighten
Then serve some time in seclusion to work on my PhD in crime
I know you and I both think
I was born in Kenya
But no. My home of the brave is
Right here. In your town.
I live in a bitter box behind the Beauty Supply on Martin Luther King Boulevard
At the corner of Mountaintop Avenue
stages of my life marked by paperwork and case numbers...
I yearn for an Independence Day that will never come
Au natural in the plein aire, hungry and dirty and smelling like pee
Counting cars going by instead of sheep I yearn to sleep
I repeat the pledge of allegiance by broken english memory to get to my American Dream
Shamelessly I succumb to the relief of my First Lady Fantasy
I AM A MAN. Dammit. I AM A MAN
